In 2005 while at a restaurant show, two Finger Lakes natives and long time friends, Chris and Jim, pursued their dream of owning a vineyard. Shortly thereafter, upon looking at a few sites, the dream became a reality with the purchase of 64-acres of land overlooking Cayuga Lake. In the height of the real estate boom, the partners had to quickly outbid an interested party for the land they knew would become the future home of Toro Run Winery.
Over the next two years the owners, along with family, friends, and local contractors, cleared land and built a vineyard community with ten 1-acre lots. Along the way 11 acres of land was cultivated and prepared for planting. In 2009 with the assistance of a local nursery and Cornell University (where Jim holds a degree in Agricultural Economics, while Chris attended UC Davis and studied Viticulture and Enology) 15,000 vines were planted.
2012 was a landmark year for Toro Run. Our first full harvest coincided with the completion of a 5,000 sq. ft. state of the art production center. This facility, being built into the embankment on the hill, allows for the collection of nutrient-rich water used on the vines and allows for natural cooling and temperature regulation. Chris and Jim’s vision was to capture the essence of the Finger Lakes’ spectacular views and climate.
In 2013 we officially opened the doors to the public. We celebrated our inaugural season with a Grand Opening Gala attended by over 300 people with live music by the Funky Blu Roots. We currently offer our customers award-winning wines in a beautiful, Spanish-themed, rustic tasting room. All of our wines are made in a true European method by our winemaker Sébastien LeSeurre who is from Champagne, France. We encourage you to visit us and enjoy the most beautiful view in the Finger Lakes.
